A Star That Exploded

The Photopic Sky Survey is a photography project that took a year to accomplish. It portrays the biggest photo of the night sky ever taken – 360-panormaic view composed of 37,000 photographs. To complete a project like this must have taken a lot of dedication, but the final outcome is definitely worth it!

I just happened upon a link to this site while being bored on tumblr; and was amazed with what i found. I’ve always loved stars. To me they’re somewhat mysterious as you will never be able to get close to one, except through telescopes and cameras.

Seeing these photos made me excited to go camping this summer, as it is the best time to view the night sky! It also reminded me of one of my favorite quotes:

“Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics. You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded. Because the elements, the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars. And the only way they could get into your body is if the stars were kind enough to explode. So forget Jesus. The stars died so you could be here today.” – Lawrence Krauss

From this I suppose you can see that I am slightly obsessed with the night sky, but each time you view it there is something new to be seen. It truly is a wonderful thing.
